This understated collection highlights the natural colours and characteristics of unadorned clay. By combining and manipulating different clays in the making process, distinct graphic patterns, subtle striations and contrasting textural qualities are achieved without the need for stains, oxides, colourants and glazes that are typically used to dress ceramic wares. The resulting clay bodies exhibit a hushed beauty, letting the nakedness of each piece tell its own story.
The pieces in this collection are hand-made using a unique combination of throwing and hand-building techniques. The manual process of combining different clays into one single body requires a knowledge of and consideration for the inherent properties of each clay component, from the rate of drying to the rate of shrinkage in the kiln. Not all clays are created equal; incompatible clays will uncouple and crack due to the stresses caused by high temperatures during the firing process.
